A Day in Sentosa: Waldorf School Singapore Picnic

A fun learning experience after a long month learning

Waldorf schools nurture a reverence for nature and an interest in the natural environment. When given a chance to have fun, not only do they connect with their teachers, but they also rejuvenate, helping them focus better on their studies.  The Waldorf approach always ensures creative play and these fun learning trips are the best way to achieve it. This includes regular outdoor play in one of the many parks around our school. Step into any of our classrooms and you will notice a nature table reflecting the seasons. Even in seasonless Singapore, the archetypes of seasons are faithfully honoured. The seasons table is a little world that reflects the larger world. Rudolf Steiner saw the seasons as deeply connected to rhythms in nature and cosmos. The seasonal cycle of growth, blossoming, harvesting and resting is woven into our curriculum, festivals and daily life in school.

Our recent school excursion offered a wonderful opportunity to connect to the beauty and wonder of the natural world. The morning began with a ramble through the foliage of Imbiah Trail. The forest offered an opportunity to observe the richness of a forest that was very different from the neighbourhood parks our children knew intimately. The climbers among us delighted in navigating the giant boulders along the trail. Rock-climbing held an all-new meaning that morning!

The highlight was the final stop – the beach! After a quick snack, our children could not wait to jump into the shimmering waters that beckoned. They splashed around, built sandcastles and made friends with schools of fish. Indeed, the blue skies and white clouds were as much a miracle as the curious eyes and open hearts of children. It was heartening to see our children in such harmony with nature and one another. The natural world held us with her wondrous light, and we loved her back with our care and respect.

The transformation in my daughter has been remarkable. She’s more confident, creative, and genuinely loves learning. The Waldorf Steiner approach has given her tools for life, not just for tests.

We chose Straits Waldorf because we wanted our son to develop as a whole person. The balance of academics, fine and practical arts, and overall creative development is awesome. My child communicates like an adult at this young age while being practical and understanding at the same time. Thanks Straits Waldorf team!

The Waldorf teachers at Straits Waldorf truly understand child development. They meet each child where they are and help them grow at their own pace.

How often are these trips organised?

It depends upon each school. While most Singaporean schools barely take the students out, we at Straits Waldorf analyse the students’ study schedule and whenever we feel students can benefit from an outdoor trip, we organise one.

Can Waldorf rhythms work with multiple children of different ages?

Yes, morning circle and afternoon activities naturally accommodate mixed ages, while main lessons can be individualized. Older kids often enjoy helping younger children, and all these elements support multi-age learning communities.

How do I make my child's picnic a learning experience?

If you are asking this question, you are already on a great start. When on vacations or picnics, children should be taught to look at the world as a book with stories. The best way is to communicate with children and ask them questions to fire up their curiosity. This way, they will start asking you questions, and you can teach them with answers. Important note: Learn not to go too deep in theory. Young children lose focus on that and may not continue the conversation. And lastly, let them enjoy their childhood, as sometimes, all they need is some fun at their age.
