Curriculum Overview
The child crosses a threshold between ages nine and ten, leaving early childhood behind and looking at the world in an increasingly awakened state. In that first experience of their separateness, which is manifested by critical questioning, and an often-challenging voice, children can experience uncertainty and fear.
An underlying theme in Grade 4 lessons is grounding the children, making them feel at home in time and space. The study of local geography and of the human being concerning the animal kingdom and the natural world addresses the child’s newly arising inner questions: Who am I? Where am I?
Your fourth grader will learn:
- Literacy: grammar, punctuation, the nine parts of speech, the four sentence structures and composition, independent reading, discussion, speech and drama. Norse mythology

Numeracy: long division and fractions, including adding, subtracting, multiplying and reducing mixed numbers and prime numbers
- Science: Zoology and farming
- Geography: Cartography and local geography
- History: Local history, Relationship between the land and human lives
- Mandarin as second language: Formal grammar, gender, spelling practice, poems, and songs
- Movement: Eurythmy, capoeira, double dutch, hula hoops, dribbling balls, clapping, chase games and creating original games
- Handwork: Cross stitch embroidery and woodworking
- Art: Watercolour and acrylic painting, geometric and form drawing and clay modelling
- Music: Recorder, singing and string ensemble
